What’s the Average Cost of AC Replacement?

Does your air conditioner have a hard time keeping up with your home’s cooling demands? Are you tired of rising energy bills and frequent breakdowns? If so, this could be the summer for an AC replacement. This upgrade requires an investment, though the amount you to pay depends on several factors.

Learn what affects the average cost of replacing an air conditioner. Then, contact GAC Services for an estimate or to schedule services.

Air Conditioner Size

It’s important to size your new air conditioner properly. An undersized unit can’t keep up with the cooling demand on the hottest afternoons. However, an oversized unit is prone to short cycling, which wears out the system faster and reduces the ability to dehumidify your home adequately.

Our technicians take the time to size your replacement AC in case your old equipment wasn’t sized accurately in the first place. This precaution also addresses any changes you might have made to your home in the years since you bought your original system.

AC units are measured in tons. A one-ton unit can remove 12,000 British thermal units (Btus) of heat per hour, while a three-ton unit can remove 36,000 Btus. In general, larger homes need bigger air conditioners, which cost more than smaller systems.

Air Conditioner Efficiency

In Maryland (and the rest of the southern United States), the minimum Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) for new air conditioners is 14 SEER. However, ACs are available with efficiency ratings up to 27 SEER.

In general, higher SEER ratings indicate lower energy bills. Of course, to achieve such impressive performance, high-efficiency ACs are equipped with advanced features, such as a variable-speed air handler, thermal expansion valve, automatic-delay fan switch, and more. These impressive features cost more, making high-efficiency air conditioners pricier upfront.

Installation Complexity

Many homeowners only think about the cost of upgrading the air conditioner, but you may need to replace other components as well. For instance, the blower motor may be too outdated to work with a new AC condensing unit. Your air ducts might also require work if they’re leaking cooled air into unconditioned spaces.

Of course, upgrading these components when replacing your air conditioner makes the entire system function more efficiently, but it’s still important to consider the upfront investment required.

It may be tempting to purchase an air conditioner from a manufacturer you’ve never heard of, but knockoffs don’t stand the test of time.
